Last year, Dawn Kinsey Smith operated a TNR program at the Humane Society of Walton County that managed to TNR more than 500 cats, preventing many more homeless cats from overriding the community. This year she has opened her own TNR program in her home county of Newton.
She has registered Not My Cat, a TNR service serving Newton county where she offers education, public speaking, classes and workshops on how to TNR feral cats that may be in your community. To learn more about it, you can email her at notmycattnr@gmail.com.
Not my Cat is not a rescue. It will host its first education workshop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22 in Covington at the Antique market next to Ace Hardware. You are invited to “come out, learn about TNR and how to build a feral cat shelter,”
“After nine years, I decided it was time to form my own nonprofit for TNR. Trap, Neuter, Return is the only humane solution for cat over-population. Cats are trapped, taken to a clinic to get spayed/neutered, vaccinated and ear tipped,” Smith said. “When I first started doing TNR, I had no idea I’d end of doing it long term. There is an enormous need for people to get involved and help! If you feed them, you need to fix them! There are several low cost clinics around that will spay, Neuter, vaccinate feral cats. Feeding cats is not enough! Cats breed at an alarming rate. In Georgia they can have up to 4 litters per year. I am a Newton county resident, therefore my nonprofits main goal is to help Newton county. Not my Cat plans to hold workshops and teach classes.”
Smith also has worked with CatSnip mobile vet to get it to go to Newton county. Catsnip is offering a mobile clinic in Newton County on Wednesday Feb. 19, 2025 at Future Farmers of America 720 FFA / FHA Camp Rd. Covington, GA 30014. Go to www.projectcatsnip.com to see if there are any appointments and to register. Click on the Catsnip Facebook page for more information on the organization and its service and locations. It also has the Humane Society of Walton County as a location on its website.
Smith said Not my Cat also uses Paradox spay neuter clinic.
“I have a long relationship with both low cost clinics. Not my Cat operates on donations. All donations are tax deductible,” Smith said. “We currently have cash app as well as a business checking account. We are happy that there is now an option for low cost spay and neuter services available to Newton county through CatSnip.”
