Library Summer programs offer last week of activity before school returns next week
It was almost a year ago on July 27 that the community came together for the groundbreaking of the expansion of the W H Stanton Memorial Library. The library was temporarily relocated to the Blue Willow Village to allow for its services to continue to be available to the residents during renovations, but that came to an end last month and this summer Social Circle residents have been able to enjoy the benefits of the newly-renovated library. The Georgia State Assembly had approved funds that allowed for the W. H. Stanton Memorial Library expansion project which was completed, along with the City’s SPLOST funds from 2012-2018 totaling $500,000.
The grand opening on June 5, 2019, drew a huge crowd and many officials from the local, regional and state level attended to enjoy the celebration and congratulate the community on what has proved to be a gem for the community this summer. Since its grand reopening, the library has enjoyed “incredible turnouts” for the Summer Reading programs. Some of the programs enjoyed this summer included a snake show, a petting zoo, a magician, countless storytimes, and a children’s gardening class sponsored by the Social Circle ACE Home Center. Another guest speaker was Len Stozier who discussed ground penetrating radar technology and its use in finding both unmarked graves and unique hidden treasures.
The children’s area of the library is the pride of Social Circle with its large book selection, children’s restroom facilities and security measures that allow for parents to keep an eye on the children while enjoying the computers and other adult benefits of the library themselves. The children’s garden also provides security and a serene location for young readers to enjoy the benefits of the library.
As the summer now winds down, Social Circle students can enjoy the final summer events at the library before heading back to the classrooms next week. This includes a showing of the movie, Dumbo, at 10 a.m. tomorrow, July 24, 2019. Young visitors to the library are invited to wear their pjs and bring pillows and blankets. Light snacks will be provided. This will be followed by Tales for Tots at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday and The Magic Mr. McClure with special Star Wars guests at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The Early Bird Book Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Once students return to the classrooms on Thursday next week, the library with its new upgraded offerings will be a great resource in the upcoming school year.
