Mr. Jones passed away after a long illness on August 15, 2020 in Monroe, Georgia.
Bobby Eugene Jones was born on January 20, 1937 to Gertrude Prater Jones and Samuel Leon Jones in Westminster, South Carolina. As a youth he worked on the family farm, milking cows every morning before school, growing cotton and wheat, and doing everything necessary to help his parents and five siblings. When he was 15, the principal asked Bobby to drive the local school bus, so Bobby obtained his driver’s license and became the school bus driver until he graduated.
After high school in 1955, Bobby went to Kansas City, MO for training in the airline industry, which led to a position with Capitol Airlines in Atlanta. In 1959, Bobby answered the call of his country and proudly served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Specialist 5 in only 2 years. Following his service, he returned to the airline industry, working with United Airlines for the next 43 years until his retirement.
On New Year’s Eve in 1963, he had his first date with Harriett Gunn, a nurse working in Atlanta. He took her home before midnight, because he had to work early the next morning, so she didn’t think he would ask her out again. They married seven months later. They raised their family in Jonesboro and Ft. Myers, FL, where Bobby served as a Deacon in his Church. Bobby and Harriett moved to Monroe in 1992, where Bobby raised cattle for 24 years. Bobby was a loving husband and father, and his marriage to Harriett lasted for 42 years until her death.
In 2009, Bobby married Hilda Dykes Smith of Monroe. Together they enjoyed a wonderful marriage of almost eleven years. They were faithful members of the First Baptist Church of Monroe.
Bobby is survived by his wife Hilda Jones of Monroe, brother Leon Jones (Sara) of Fayetteville, sisters Louise Hull (James) of Greenwood, SC, Patsy Burgess of Simpsonville, SC, Juanita Bray (Dillard) of Mauldin, SC, Debbie Carlisle (James) of Norcross, and children, Nancy Jones of Kennesaw, and Rob Jones (Trish) of Fernandina Beach, FL. His beloved grandchildren are Emily Jones of Austin, TX, Caroline Jones of Washington DC, and Sam Jones of Atlanta. In addition to his parents and his wife Harriett, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law David Burgess.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 17th at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Dr. Todd Ware officiating. Interment will follow in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery in Monroe.
