Cosetta Still Chenggis, age 97, passed away on February 1, 2019. She was born on October 12, 1921 in Empoli, Italy to the late Alberto Bacci and the late Gisella Setti.
Newly married in November 1945, Cosetta Gemma Virginia Bacci Still, 24, sailed for America in April 1946. She landed – as per her immigrant status – at Ellis Island, New York. She was one of many World War II war brides who, because of military protocol, could not sail home with their new American G.I. husbands.
Cosetta had lived through World War II and the Nazi occupation of Florence. Now she left her home and family and the life she knew in Florence, Italy, for America the unknown. At Ellis Island, workers helped her get to the train that would take her to Monroe, Georgia, her husband, Willie E. Still, and her new family.
The couple had two sons: Willie E. Still Jr. and C. Albert Still. After Willie Sr.’s death, Cosetta married Neal Griswold. After Griswold’s passing, she married Andrew Chenggis. The Chenggises lived many years in Tucker, near son Albert’s family. Cosetta lived the American dream and made the most of adjustment to a new country and very different life. From her mother-in-law, she learned to cook “Southern” Her Sweet Potato Pie was legend, but so was her Lasagna.
She is survived by sons Willie (Anita) and Albert (Mary); grandchildren Susan Still Rickman (Charles), Michael Still (Kimberly), Wes Still and Landy Still (Karen); great grandchildren Mary Katherine and Alex Rickman, and Kristina, Alisa and Tyler Still; and great great granddaughter Sequoia Still. Many friends and more distant family members mourn the loss of this spunky, lovable lady who never totally lost her Italian accent or her zest for life much to everyone’s delight.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home in Monroe, GA. Interment will follow at Hill Haven Memory Gardens in Monroe, GA.
