Edward Michael Cleary, Jr., age 98 of Monroe, GA, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2020. He was the son of Edward Michael Cleary, Sr., and Lottie Stipes Cleary. A Private Funeral Mass will be held at St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church, Snellville, GA, with Father Cyriac C. Mattathilanickal and Father John Welch officiating. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, Snellville, GA.
Born and raised in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Mr. Cleary worked as a tungsten carbide engineer for over 75 years and did not believe in retirement. Mr. Cleary never knew a stranger and will be remembered for his quick wit, storytelling, and positive outlook. He was a member of St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church, the St. Oliver Men’s Club, The Knights of Columbus, and Loganville American Legion Post 233. He was a WWII Army Veteran, earning a Purple Heart Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne E. (Kidney) Cleary; Sons, Bob Cleary and Mick Cleary; Grandchildren, Nancy Leicht Kuykendall, Aaron Cleary, and Ryan Michael Cleary; and Great Grandson Matthew Kuykendall. Surviving are his daughter, Peggy Leicht of Monroe, GA; Son, Tom (Janet) Cleary of Norristown, PA; Daughter, Mary Kay (Flynn) Clyburn of Madison, GA; fifteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Mr. Cleary’s honor to St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church Men’s Club, 3200 Brooks Drive, Snellville, GA 30078.
