With gratitude for a life well lived, we share that Mexie Matthews Thompson of Lawrenceville, GA entered into her Heavenly home on Saturday, April 4, 2026. She was a comforting presence to all who knew her and will be missed dearly.
A Funeral Service will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, April 13, 2026 in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with Quentin Cashman and Tommy Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Hill Haven Memory Gardens, Monroe, GA. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM – 11:45 AM prior to the service.
Mexie was the youngest of 7 siblings, born in their family home on September 15,1931 to Lula
and Fred Matthews in Cumberland County, North Carolina.
Mexie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 57 years, Tony of Lawrenceville, GA; children, Anita Sadowski (Dale) of Racine WI, Richard Cashman of Milwaukee WI, Quentin Cashman (Conni) of Loganville, GA , Sharon Schultz (David) of Monroe,GA; grandchildren, Christine Sadowski, Michael Sadowski (Paula), Amy Baker (Todd), Melissa Pyne (Greg), Dave Cashman, Ryan Cashman (Stephanie), Meagan Thornton (Jamie), Taylor Schultz; great grandchildren, Morgan Fandrey, Heather Lussier (Robert), Lynzee Culver (Nolan), Sawyer Pyne, Chloe Baker, Hudson Pyne, Scarlett Pyne, Jack Baker, Violet Pyne, Amelia Thornton and Madison Thornton; great-great grandchildren, Mira Louise Lussier, Emerson Culver, Odin Lussier. Mexie is also survived by her brother in law, Tommy Thompson and wife Beth of Prattville, AL, Ronnie Thompson of Elmore, AL and many dear nieces, nephews and close friends. Also left to cherish her memory is Susan Carter (Larry) of Roswell, GA their friendship was a loving sanctuary of mutual trust, sharing bonds of encouragement that would see them through decades. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, youngest son James “Tiger” Cashman and daughter in law Teresa Cashman.
She will lovingly be remembered for her devotion to her beloved husband Tony Thompson whom she met while he was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina where they both worked at the Army Hospital Base. It would take the much younger soldier two years of demonstrating a consistent protective presence to convince the divorced mother of five children that he was the man that loved her enough to help her raise her children. They married in 1968 and moved to Tony’s hometown of Montgomery, AL where they worked hard, raised the children and built a full life. Their summer lake cabin would provide a place for grandkids to learn how to ski, fishing and laughter filled days, a gathering place to be shared and for memories to be made. They would both eventually retire and move to Georgia to be closer to children and grandchildren. Mexie enjoyed traveling; their cruise to Alaska was a favorite, many trips to the Smokey Mountains, road trips out west, up the East Coast, Disney Cruise, Disney World with and without grandkids!
Mexie was endlessly kind, always eager to lend a helping hand or smile. Her joyous spirit was infectious to all who knew her or even just met her. She believed in the virtues of respect and kindness and taught these lessons through her daily actions. She had to be strong all of her life but so was her faith.
To know Mexie is to know… she love, love, loved her family, had a vivacious personality, always had a funny story to tell, never met a stranger, could be anyone’s best friend and some of her most favorite people call her Nanny.
