Obituary and funeral services: Evelyn Virginia Stokes, 81, of Monroe

Evelyn Virginia Stokes, age 81, of Monroe, died on September 10, 2017.

She was born on April 20, 1936 in Macon, GA to the late Annie Louise Collins Brown and the late Homer Erwin Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Hugh Stanley Stokes.
She is survived by her daughters and son in law, Teresa Stokes of Atlanta, Denise Stokes of Atlanta, Lenore and Frank Mickle of Alpharetta; grandchildren, Dr. Charlton Payne of Berlin, Germany, Alexis Torres of San Francisco, CA, Jessika and Adam Brannon of Hiram; brothers and sisters, Kathryn Wehunt of Macon, Richard (Janice) Brown of Macon, Georgia Brown of Marietta, Bobby (Nancy) Brown of Milledgeville, Frank (Cynthia) Brown of Centerville; brothers in law, Ralph Stokes of Macon, Charles (Barbre) Stokes of Katy, TX; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Virginia graduated from Miller High School, received her bachelor’s degree from Georgia College, and master’s degree from Georgia State University. She taught in DeKalb County 24 years, and Henry County 3 years. She traveled extensively throughout Europe. She sang with the Decatur Civic Chorus, then later with the choir of Monroe First United Methodist Church where she was member, lay minister, and treasurer. One of her greatest joys was teaching and training in the Methodist church’s Disciple program. She was a certified master gardener with a passion for growing various botanicals, an extraordinary cook, an avid cruciverbalist, dedicated teacher, and deeply loyal wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 at Meadows Funeral Home from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Monroe First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Dane Wagner officiating. Interment will follow at Macon Memorial Park at 4:00 pm.
