Jess Oliver Mulkey, age 88, of Monroe, GA, passed away on May 6, 2017. He was born in Loachapoka, ALA in Lee County on September 25, 1928 to parents Jess N. Mulkey of Franklin County, GA. and Thula Logan Mulkey of Waverly, ALA.
Jess spent most of his childhood in Acworth, Georgia. In high school he entered and graduated from the Georgia Military Academy in College Park, GA (also known as Woodward Academy). During high school he was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he would serve twice; at the end of World War II (22nd Marine Division) and again in the Korean War (1st Marine Division (also known as the China Marines)). Between his military service assignments, he met Jane Smith from Marietta GA. They were married on April 22, 1950. They lived the majority of their married life in Monroe. Jess served as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe where he was an active member. During his career, he worked in the timber industry as co-owner of the Mulkey Lumber Company and in sales in the brick industry for Merry Companies, Inc. Augusta GA (later acquired in 1980 by Boral headquartered in Sidney Australia). He retired from Boral USA in 1998. Outside of time spent at work or with his family, Jess enjoyed playing golf. He acquired many life long friends through the game of golf. After retiring, he reunited with his former Marine buddies, where he and Jane would enjoy trips throughout the U.S
Jess was preceded in death by his wife Jane Smith Mulkey, is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law Nan Mulkey O’Kelley (Rickie George O’Kelley, deceased), Debbie M. and Steve Long, and Kim M. and Lee Smith all of Monroe, GA, grandson John Q. Francis, III and wife Corinne of Atlanta, GA., and three great-grand children Niko James, Jonas Oliver and Sibyl Lois Francis
A visitation was held Monday, May 8, 2017 between 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm at Meadows Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe on 500 Breedlove Drive with Rev. George Rogers officiating. A graveside service immediately follows. In lieu of flowers the family ask donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe.
