MONROE, GA (Dec. 4, 2025) On Wednesday afternoon, Monroe Fire Department crews responded to a car that had crashed into a house in the 500 block of N. Broad Street, next to Church’s Chicken.
A witness told officials he was traveling south on North Broad Street behind vehicle when he saw it leave its lane of travel and appear to accelerate across the road and cross back over all traffic lanes and drive through multiple yards before it hit a house. Georgia State Patrol worked the incident.
According to GSP Post 46 Assistant Commander Christoph Ayers, the incident began with a black 2016 GMC SUV traveling south on North Broad Street in the city limits of Monroe near North Midland Avenue.
“The driver of that vehicle was driving in a reckless manner and under the influence of drugs. These actions caused the GMC SUV to leave its lane of travel and drive on the wrong side of the road for a short period of time before striking a GDOT road sign. The vehicle then crossed back over all lanes of traffic and exited the west shoulder of roadway,” Ayers said. “At that time the vehicle struck the mailbox of 521 North Broad Street, drove through the front yard and over the asphalt driveway of 511 North Broad Street. The vehicle then struck a metal fence and the dwelling of 507 North Broad Street. As a result of all these actions there was severe damage caused to the sod and underground irrigation system in the front yard of 511 North Broad Street. There was also severe damage caused to the dwelling of 507 North Broad Street to the extent that the Monroe Fire Department responded to inspect the dwelling.”
Ayers said the driver of the GMC SUV was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of drugs. He was subsequently released to the hospital in order to treat him for injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver reportedly told officials that he had a coughing fit that led him to pass out and crash.
