One dead in Gwinnett in officer involved shooting

Gwinnett County Police Department is reporting that one person has died as a result of an officer-involved shooting Saturday in the county. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations has been called in to investigate the incident that happened on Suwanee Mill Drive in unincorporated Buford when officers responded to a domestic dispute between the suspect and his wife.

“When the officers arrived, the suspect, an adult male, was standing outside with a knife in his hand. As the officers gave verbal commands, the suspect went inside and came back out with a handgun. The officers negotiated with the suspect to drop the gun, but the suspect refused,” GCPD reported in a press release. “After several minutes, the suspect pointed his gun at several officers. One officer shot, striking the suspect. The officers on scene attempted to render aid, but the suspect died at the scene.”

GCPD said the identities of the suspect and the officer are not being released at this time.

GBI spokesperson Natalie Ammons said in a press release that preliminary information indicates “that at approximately 3:30 pm, the GCPD responded to a domestic incident at the above address. Officers encountered a male subject on the back porch of the residence armed with a handgun. The officers attempted to negotiate with the subject to drop the weapon. During the negotiation, the subject, at some point, pointed his weapon in the direction of an officer. One officer discharged their weapon, fatally striking the subject.”

Ammons said that no officers were injured in this incident. On completion of the investigation by the GBI, the case will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney for review.
