Organizers tout success of self-defense fundraiser for woman battling cancer

Kristen Henshaw said Saturday’s fundraiser at Patriot Karate in Loganville for Nicole Helms, a local woman battling Stage 4 breast cancer, was a success despite the short notice and rush to arrange it.

“We raised $1,042 for Nicole and her family through this event. That was without sponsors and with very little time to put it together,” Henshaw said. “Patriot Karate decorated their place with the pink curtains, beautiful flowers, and posters. They also have a staff member who is a breast cancer survivor of 8 years. Nicole was our guest of honor and she participated in the kickboxing and Hip Hop! Her last chemo was last week, and she was still able to come and dance and kickbox and grace us all with her presence! She is very upbeat and positive and was absolutely shining with energy and enthusiasm all afternoon! We were able to raise a substantial amount of money and support for her in a very short amount of time. The emotions were raw and real when she was presented with the donations and Patriot Karate also presented her with beautiful pink geraniums for her garden! The women’s self-defense demo was a huge success as well, and everyone had a wonderful time.
