Presentation by Walton County’s Youth Advocacy Board at Monroe City Council meeting

The Walton County Youth Advocacy Board will be giving a presentation to the Monroe City Council and attendees at the March City Council meeting this week. The YAB is a group of future leaders from local schools that serve as a voice for Walton County and an outlet for community youth to have a say in issues that are relevant to them. These teens are encouraged to get involved in political issues from local all the way up to the national level and to affect youth policy by meeting with their local legislators on issues of importance to them and other youth in the community they represent. They recently went to the Capitol and presented a legislative update to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp as well as local state Rep. Bruce Williamson (R-Monroe) and state Senator Bill Cowsert.

This group of high schoolers are tasked with “finding solutions and implementing change in their community.” According to the mission, the Youth Advocacy Board identifies “key youth issues in our community and the surrounding areas. To address these issues, they develop and participate in community service projects. All service projects stem from identified key issues and are voted on and approved by youth board members.”  In working as advocates for their peers, “the YAB plans, organizes and implements fun education youth activities within the county. Activities focus on drug and alcohol abuse prevention, healthy sexual decisions, preventing bullying, and helping those in need.”

On March 21, the teens are hosting a phone-free event near the Historic Courthouse in Walton County. They are encouraging everyone to “Look up and check-in their phones” from 4 – 7 p.m. and instead engage in some collective community events such as music, art and games.

The March City Council for the City of Monroe will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at the Walton County City Hall located at 215 N. Broad St. in Monroe. The community is welcome to attend.
