Scam Alert: WCSO warns of a new scam claiming to be from the DMV/DDS on unpaid traffic tickets

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies are warning of a new scam circulating in Georgia where individuals receive fraudulent emails or text messages claiming they have unpaid traffic tickets or toll violations. These messages often threaten severe penalties, such as license suspension or legal action, to coerce recipients into making immediate payments through malicious links.

Example:

How the Scam Works
    •    Impersonation of Authorities: Scammers pose as the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS), the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), or toll agencies like Peach Pass.
    •    Threatening Language: Messages may state that failure to pay will result in license suspension, legal prosecution, or damage to credit scores.
    •    Phishing Links: Recipients are directed to click on links that lead to fake websites designed to steal personal and financial information.
    •    Urgency and Fear Tactics: The messages create a sense of urgency to prompt immediate action without proper verification.

How to Protect Yourself
    •    Do Not Click on Links: Avoid clicking on any links in unsolicited messages claiming unpaid fines or tickets.
    •    Verify Through Official Channels: If you receive such a message, independently verify any claims by contacting the Georgia DDS or relevant authorities directly through their official websites or customer service numbers.
    •    Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Messages: Government agencies typically do not initiate contact via text messages or emails requesting payment.
    •    Report Suspicious Messages: Report any suspicious communications to the Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at (404) 651-8600 or online at https://consumer.ga.gov. You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov.
