Social Circle man dies in motorcycle accident Friday night

A 23-year-old Social Circle man died in a motorcycle accident on State Route 11 north of Monroe Friday night, Aug. 16, 2019.

According to Sgt. Cory Seymour with Georgia State Patrol, just after 10 p.m. last night, Joseph Shelton, 23, of Social Circle was operating a 2019 Harley Davidson XL1200S west on Mountain Creek Church Road when he was unable to safety stop as he approached the stop sign at SR 11.

“He traveled into the intersection and was struck by a southbound vehicle. Shelton was ejected from the motorcycle and the motorcycle traveled into the northbound lane where it was struck by a northbound vehicle,” Seymour said. The motorcycle also was hit by another southbound vehicle. Shelton died at the scene as a result of injuries received in the accident.

Seymour said alcohol or drugs are not suspected of being a contributing factor in the crash. TFC Doug Allen investigated the crash. No other injuries were reported. Shelton’s next of kin have been notified. He is the son of Social Circle City Councilman Steve Shelton.

This is the second Walton County resident killed in a motorcycle accident this month. Bailey Hill, 22, of Monroe, died on Aug. 8 following a motorcycle wreck in the unincorporated Loganville area of Gwinnett County.
