The Donut Dash Saturday is to raise funds for the Special Olympics and in honor of its biggest supporter

The annual Donut Dash in Loganville is organized by the Loganville Police Department to raise funds for the Walton County Special Olympics that take place each year in the spring. Next spring, its biggest supporter will not be there and nor will she be at the annual Donut Dash this weekend. But there is no doubt that Janice Tribble will be on everybody’s mind at both events.

As runners, walkers and organizers gather at Loganville High School Saturday for the 10th Annual Donut Dash, they will do so in honor of “Ms. Janice.” She passed away on Sept. 12, just one month short of the event that was initially originated by the LPD to help in her fundraising for the Special Olympics. She gave so many years and so much of herself for decades to ensure that the special athletes had the time of their life each year at the Special Olympics.

“We started this Donut Dash because of Janice Tribble. She was the fire that made Special Olympics happen,” Loganville Chief Dick Lowry said. “A lot of the reason we started it was because Janice and Harold were funding part of the Special Olympics out of pocket every year. Last year, we hit almost $15,000. I really wanted $20,000 to donate to Special Olympics so I’m going to donate more than I normally do for her and I hope that we have the opportunity to raise more.”

In previous years, it cost $25,000 to cover the cost of the Olympics and all the money was raised through fundraisers and donations.

The Donut Dash 5K is Saturday, Sept.12, 2024, at Loganville High school! Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race begins promptly at 9 a.m. There will be official time keepers and an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the race!
