There will be no Walton County Empty Stocking Fund food drive and giveaway in 2020

The Empty Stocking Fund is unfortunately one of the casualties of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. There will be no Empty Stocking Fund food drive and giveaway this year.

“This year has been filled with uncertainties related to the pandemic which forced The Empty Stocking Fund to make decisions early on regarding the safety of our applicants and volunteers. The application process is held in person as is packaging and distribution. The Empty Stocking Fund does not have the resources to develop adequate protocol and safety measures to operate safely in the COVID-19 environment,” said Johnny Martin chair of the board of organizers for the Empty Stocking Fund, adding that as a result, “the choice was made to postpone this year and begin planning for our biggest year yet in 2021. Many have asked how they can help this year and The Empty Stocking Fund committee is encouraging the community to support organizations like F.I.S.H, Shepherd’s Staff Ministries, and the Walton Senior Center as we continue to enjoy The 2020 Christmas Season.”

The Empty Stocking Fund is a community effort that relies heavily on the school system to collect non-perishables. Volunteers also come come together at the end of the drive to package the boxes for distribution. The Empty Stocking Fund of Walton County answers a need in the community by providing a box filled with perishable and nonperishable items to members of the Walton County Community for Christmas. With the impact on the community of COVID-19, there is likely a bigger need than ever this year so it is likely to be missed.

If you are able to help, you can do so by donating to these three local food banks or any others that you support. They will likely experience a heavier dependance on their services this year, particularly in the light of no Empty Stocking Fund. And if you are somebody who was relying on the Empty Stocking Fund to help you through the season, you can contact one of the same organizations for that help.
