Viewed as a shining light for Loganville, Walton County

Janice Tribble never liked to talk about herself much, always preferring to emphasize the various causes and organizations she contributed to, volunteered for and promoted in a life filled with service to others.

Yet she could hardly avoid the spotlight given how many events she attended and groups she joined. Together, she and her husband, Harold, were widely recognized as one of the power couples of Loganville for all they did, together and separately, through the years for their beloved hometown.

It’s a story that has come to an end for Tribble, as she passed Thursday after a battle with cancer.

Janice Tribble met Harold in 1946 and were married for 62 years. During that time, Tribble started Miss Janice’s Kindergarten in 1970, educating many of Loganville’s leading lights for some years. They attend Loganville Methodist Church, where she and Harold taught Sunday school and led the church youth group.

She coached softball, led Girl Scout troops, was on the PTA at every school her children attended and was active in the Loganville Chamber of Commerce when it still existed. She also served on the Loganville City Council and the city’s Planning and Zoning Committee at different times, always working to make her home a better place

She is perhaps best known for her work on behalf of the Special Olympics, which she volunteered with for more than 30 years. She and Harold helped organize the annual games for children with special needs, as well as led fundraising efforts over the years to keep the event going strong. Tribble was recognized, along with Harold and the other volunteers for the Special Olympics, as an Unsung Hero by The Walton Tribune in 2012 for their contributions to keeping the event running and said at the time it was a true labor of love.

“You have to love and this whole committee loves each other,” Tribble was quoted in the Tribune’s Visions 2012 magazine. “I think the love in this group for each other and the children, that to me makes everything worthwhile.”

Tribble was also named an Unsung Hero in 2006 by The Walton Tribune, honored for her years in education first with her private kindergarten and then at Loganville Elementary School. Tribble was remembered fondly by those she touched in her long years of service to Loganville.

“We lost Mrs. Janice Tribble this morning…Loganville Police Department’s biggest fan and supporter and the person who involved us in Walton County Special Olympics,” the LPD posted on its Facebook page on Thursday. “Our prayers are with Mr. Harold, Toni and Grant and their family. We’ll always support these special kids in your honor, Mrs. Janice. We promise!”

A funeral service took place a 2.30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024.
