Two men were arrested in Walton County Monday, July 29, 2019, after a high-speed chase down Highway 81 north and into Youth Middle School near Walnut Grove ended with a pit maneuver. Walton County Sheriff’s Office shared the information on the Facebook Page and provided a video of the incident. (The video has been edited for length)
WCSO report that the pursuit began when the driver of a vehicle failed to comply when a deputy attempted to stop it on Hwy 81 North. Speeds of 90 mph were reportedly recorded during the chase before the vehicle slowed down when it turned into Youth Middle School.
“Our Deputy noticed there were students and faculty practicing there so he performed a pit maneuver on the truck to ensure that it stopped before endangering any students and faculty,” WCSO reported.
The passenger and the driver had numerous warrants out of Dekalb and Gwinnett Counties, including for robbery, and the driver allegedly had a gun. He sustained minor injuries, possibly a dislocated ankle, and the passenger allegedly had a knife in his waistband, according to WCSO.
The driver, identified as Philemon Gray, 34, of Lithonia, was charged with felony fleeing, seatbelt violation, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon as well as other traffic charges. The passenger, Terrill Banks, 37, of Decatur, had warrants for shoplifting out of Dekalb County, failure to appear, fleeing, obstruction, theft by receiving, suspended license out of Gwinnett County and for robbery (business) out of Dekalb County.
