Unemployment drops in Georgia in July, including NE Georgia and Atlanta Regional Commission

Rate are still up year over year

Georgia’s Regional Commissions reported a decline in unemployment rates for July, except in the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission. The Central Savannah River, Southern Georgia, and Three Rivers Regional Commissions saw no change from the previous month.

“With over 5 million Georgians ready to work, our mission is clear: to turn this untapped potential into real, meaningful job opportunities,” Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said in a press release. “To build a stronger, more resilient Georgia for tomorrow, we must partner with businesses today to create jobs, leverage the power of our skilled workforce, and keep unemployment low.”

Northeast Georgia Regional Commission includes the counties of Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Jasper, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Walton Counties.

• The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.8 percent over-the-month, the rate was 3.0 percent one year ago. 
• The labor force was down 724 over-the-month and up 10,624 over-the-year, to 339,175. 
• The number of employed was down 238 over-the-month and up 7,641 over-the-year, to 326,311.
• Initial claims were up 11 over-the-month and down 89 over-the-year, to 1,320.

Atlanta Regional Commission includes the counties of Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale Counties.

• The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.8 percent over-the-month, the rate was 3.1 percent one year ago. 
• The labor force was up 2,335 over-the-month and up 48,031 over-the-year, to 2,725,881, an all-time high.
• The number of employed was up 5,947 over-the-month and up 29,794 over-the-year, to 2,623,333.
• Initial claims were up 617 over-the-month and down 3,356 over-the-year, to 11,283.
