Update: 2-vehicle crash on Ga. 138 Thursday results in a fatality

Update

Two people were seriously injured and one person died in a collision Thursday evening on Ga. Highway 138 at Michael Etchison Road.

According to Cpl. Cal Barton with Georgia State Patrol, a 2003 Toyota Echo driven by Shataijai Green, 24, of Monroe, was traveling west on Ga. 138 on Jan. 14, 2021. The driver was attempting to turn left onto Michael Etchison Road when she allegedly failed to yield and was struck in the passenger side by a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Justin Daut, 22, of Monroe.

The front seat passenger in the Toyota Echo, Tabitha Johnson, 37, of Monroe, was transported to Piedmont Walton but did not survive her injuries. Green and another back seat passenger were transported to Piedmont Athens with serious injuries. The driver of the Dodge Ram was not injured.

“The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was called in to assist with the investigation,” Barton said. “No charges at this time, but are pending further investigation.”

Monroe Police and first responders are on the scene of a 2-vehicle crash on Highway 138 at Michael Etchison Road. MPD Public Information Officer Shannon Haynes reports that Highway 138 eastbound is currently shut down. Significant injuries are reported.

GSP is reporting that a reconstruction team is on the way. Avoid the area.
