Update: All lanes on Hwy 78 are back open after being shut down due to house fire

Fire initially reported as a vehicle fire in a carport

Update:

Walton County Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Craig League reports that the fire was first reported at 2:08 p.m. as a vehicle fire in the 700 block of Highway 78. He said the road was shut down in both directions for a short period due to the routing of the water supply hose across Highway 78 from the hydrant at Cattle Barn Road.

“All lanes are now open,” League said just after 4 p.m. He said the call was updated to a house fire once it was determined the vehicle fire was under an attached carport. “Upon arrival firefighters found the vehicle fully involved with heavy fire in the attic over the carport.”

League said all of the occupants were able to evacuate safely.

“The fire cause major damage to the attic of the house, and severe smoke and water damage throughout. Fire investigators are investigating the cause of the vehicle fire,” League said. “Red Cross has been called to assist the occupants of the home. The fire has displaced four adults, and one child.”

WALTON COUNTY, GA (Oct. 26, 2024) At 2.35 p.m. Saturday, Monroe Fire Chief Andrew Dykes reported that Monroe Fire Department is currently assisting Walton County Fire Rescue with a house fire in the vicinity of Highway 78 and Cattle Barn Road. Dykes said Highway 78 is currently closed in both directions.
