Update
A 30-year-old Athens man died early Thursday morning when his vehicle ran into the back of a garbage truck that was stopped on Highway 78 westbound in Walton County.
According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Cal Barton, a 2006 International 7000 trash truck belonging to Southern Sanitation was stopped on Highway 78 to pick-up trash when a Toyota 4-runner, driven by Bradley Crawford, 30, of Athens, failed to “stop, slow down or change lanes.”
“It ran into the rear of the trash truck,” Barton said. “One person was outside of the truck picking up trash. The driver of the trash truck was inside the truck. The call came in at 6:04 a.m.”
Barton said Crawford died at the scene. He was unrestrained at the time of the accident. His next of kin have been notified. Both vehicles were in the westbound lanes. The Southern Sanitation truck was driven by David Sailors, 58, of Auburn.
