WALTON COUNTY, GA (Jan. 1, 2026) – Buddhist monks on a “Walk for Peace” will be spending the first night of 2026 at the Walton County Fire Station 13 on Guthrie Road in Walnut Grove.

Their journey to Washington DC began in Fort Worth, Texas, 67 days ago and passed through Snellville on New Year’s eve before continuing on their journey, passing through Walton County and stopping overnight at the Walton County Fire Rescue fire station on Guthrie Road tonight.

According to USA today, the voyage is reported to be taking the monks 2,300 miles to “raise awareness of peace, loving kindness, and compassion across America and the world,” according to the group. The walk is estimated to take 120 days.

Local residents were thrilled to hear about the visit and made sure to turn out to give them a great Walnut Grove, Walton County, welcome.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office noted that the monks were scheduled to receive visitors at Walton County Fire Station 13 on Guthrie Rd from 6-9 p.m. tonight. While honored to be included in the walk for peace, WCSO had concerns about traffic congestion as a result of the event.

“Should you decide to visit we ask that you avoid parking in citizens driveways and do not park on the shoulder of the roadway and abandon your vehicles. This is a residential area and we appreciate your help respecting private property and the roadway must stay open,” WCSO wrote on Social media, updating not long after the area around Guthrie Road and Station 13 quickly got too congested to support any additional traffic or pedestrians.

“Due to the lack of infrastructure to support the parking and visiting in this area, we are recommending at this time to wait until the end of tomorrow’s route to visit. An updated location and visiting hours for tomorrow will be available as soon as possible,” WCSO wrote.
