Update: Canes win, 52 – 24 final – Loganville mayor to wear purple

Update

After going into the second half down 24 – 16, the Monroe Area High School Hurricanes turned it around, finishing with a 52 – 24 win! Looks like Loganville Mayor Rey Martinez is in the market for a purple shirt!

Initial Story

Friday night football this week focuses on the annual rivalry between the Monroe Area and Loganville high school football teams and the community, and officials, are already facing off on the possible outcome. This year, the Monroe Hurricanes have the home field advantage with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Purple Pit at Monroe Area High School.

Monroe Mayor John Howard is betting on the home team.

“I just made a little wager with Rey Martinez (Mayor of Loganville). He has informed me the Red Devils are going to take down the Purple Hurricanes Friday night. I am picking the ‘Canes, 35-7,” Howard said in a Facebook post. “We win, Rey wears a MAHS shirt on Monday (the exact opposite could be true, if Loganville surprises).”

Howard says red is not his color and he doesn’t expect to be wearing it Monday. However, based on history, the odds over the last six years only give him a 50-50 chance. The Red Devils notched up wins in 2014, 2015 and 2016 with scores of 28 -12, 27 – 6 and 30 -7 respectively. The Canes were victorious in 2012 with a 50 -7 win, in 2013 with a 48 – 21 win and then coming back last year to log a 24 – 14 victory over the Red Devils. Both teams are coming off wins in their season openers last week.

So who will be supporting the opposing team come Monday? Who will take home the 2018 victory – the Canes or the Red Devils?
