Update: Charges pending in crash that killed a 60-year-old man


Georgia State Troopers report that Richard R. Schmidt, 60,of Auburn, died at the scene of a crash on Ga. 11 in the Campton area at about 2:16 a.m. this morning. His son, Kevin Buice, 18, who was a passenger in the vehicle with Schmidt was taken to Piedmonth Athens Regional Center by ambulance. Troopers said early indications are that a Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Alexis Wynn, crossed the center line of Ga. 11 and struck the Mitsubishi Montero Sport carrying Schmidt and Buice head on. Wynn was flown to Atlanta Medical Center. Troopers believe that alcohol was a contributing factor and confirm that charges are pending.

 Initial Story

A head on collision on Ga. 11  just before 2:16 a.m. on Sept. 15, 2018 resulted in the death of one victim and injury to two others. According to Capt. Craig League with Walton County Fire Rescue, the accident happened just north of the Shoal Creek Road intersection. WCFR, along with Monroe Fire Department, responded to the call.

“Upon arrival by Fire and EMS personnel, there were three patients involved, all three were entrapped and had to be extricated by fire personnel. One patient died at the scene, one patient was transported by ground ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital, the third patient was air-lifted to Atlanta Medical Center via Air Life air ambulance,” League said.

Georgia State Patrol, and Walton County Sheriffs Office is investigating the accident. At this time no names have been released.
