In two games, the Loganville High School Varsity Baseball team returns from Foley Field in Athens 2018 Georgia 5A Baseball Champions after beating the Buford Wolves in two games straight.
The Loganville Red Devils 5A baseball team plays for its second Georgia High School Championship in as many years Monday afternoon. The returning champions take on Buford for the 2018 state championship. After beating Starr’s Mill last Tuesday in two games straight in the semifinals in the 2018 Georgia Boys Baseball State Championship Brackets: GHSA – Class AAAAA tournament. And after being named Braves 400 Club All Star Coach of the Year last year when LHS won state, baseball coach Jeff Segars is leading the Red Devils back to the finals again this year.
Ranked 5th in the state and 59th in the nation, the Red Devils will face off against the Buford Wolves, ranked 11th in the state and 136th in the nation. Kickoff time for game 1 is 5 p.m. on Monday, May 21, with the second game to follow at 7:30 p.m. If a third game is required, it will be on Wednesday, May 23.
Loganville and Buford each have three state championships under their belt, Loganville the most recent with a win in the finals in 2017 when it beat Wayne County to take the title. It also won the championship in 2012 and 2008 and had one other failed attempt, losing to Gainesville in the finals in 2002. Buford also has three state titles, but in different classes, the most recent one in 2015 when it beat Whitewater to take the title of 4A baseball. The two teams have never faced each other in a playoff game but did have two games against each other this year, with Loganville emerging the winner both times.
