Update: Despite massive manhunt and $5,000 reward, murder suspect remains at large

Update – April 19, 2018 at 9 p.m.

Despite an exhaustive search and hundreds of man hours of searching, Jerome Ray Mobley, 39, remains at large. Mobley is wanted in connection with the alleged murder of his estranged wife’s early Wednesday morning, April 18, 2018. Both Walton County Sheriff’s Office and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office have offered a reward of $2,500 each for information on the whereabouts of Mobley.

In an update on the WCSO Facebook page on Thursday evening, Sheriff Joe Chapman wrote that over the last two days and nights, WCSO along with hundreds of officers, both local and state, deputies from Walton, Barrow, Gwinnett and Morgan County Sheriff’s offices along with Georgia State Patrol, Departent of Natural Resources and Georgia Bureau of Investigation have searched the Knox Chapel Road area at the county line near the Hard Labor Creek State Park both in Morgan County and Walton County without finding the suspect.

“As of this evening, Jerome Mobley has not been located. Yesterday morning, the truck that he was driving was found behind the cemetery on Knox Chapel Road. We have used people, dogs, four wheelers, helicopters and quite a bit of other technology in our attempts to locate him,” Chapman wrote. “We will continue to search for Mobley until he is found and answers these charges.”

Chapman said the U.S. Marshall’s Fugitives Task Force has been asked to join in the investigation because of the probability that Mobley could have fled the area or even the state.

“We have no leads as to his whereabouts and, as we did yesterday, we are again asking for your help,” Chapman wrote. “Anyone who has credible information can contact us and remain anonymous. We will not stop until he is caught.”

Chapman went on to thank the other law enforcement agencies and the public for their overwhelming support.

The incident began at about 6:45 am. on Wednesday morning with a call from the victim’s home on Knox Chapel Road in the Social Circle area of Walton County where the body of Mobley’s estranged wife was located. She is reported to have been shot. Mobley’s truck was found abandoned about a mile and a half away in Morgan County, kicking off the manhunt. Chapman said it was possible that Mobley himself was wounded.

Warrants have been issued for Mobley on charges of felony murder, aggravated assault and two counts of cruelty to child in 1st degree. Mobley had been ordered to stay away from his wife and children in January after he was charged with cruelty to children, reckless conduct and making terroristic threats. According to Alcovy Circuit Court records, a motion was filed on April 2 to revoke his bond.
