Update
A 2009 Sterling crane truck overturned on GA 20 Tuesday morning near Coparts south of Loganville, closing down both lanes for a time and backing up traffic. The driver, Alejandro Contreras-Alvarao, 25, ran from the scene and was later apprehended by Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
“The vehicle was traveling north on Georgia 20, following to closely to another vehicle. Driver steered to the right, off the east shoulder to avoid an impact with the vehicle ahead,” Georgia State Patrol Trooper Cal Barton said. “Vehicle struck a culvert with its front, causing it to overturn.”
Barton said it came to final rest on its right side, facing west. The driver then fled the scene and was later arrested by WCSO.
“The driver was charged with Following Too Closely, Driving while Unlicensed & Failure to Notify Upon Striking Fixture,” Barton said. “H was transported to and booked into the Walton County Jail.”
Initial Story
Walton County Fire and Emergency Services is reporting that there is a crane on its side in the middle of GA 20, south of Loganville. At 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, Capt. Jeff Allen with WCFR reported that all lanes are currently blocked. Avoid this area.
The crane operator left the scene for reasons unknown, but officials report he is now in custody.
Allen said the crane appeared to be headed towards Loganville. The accident happened just across the road from Coparts.
