Update: EF1 tornado with winds of 100 mph likely responsible for Social Circle storm damage

Update

According to Steve Brueck of North Georgia Weather, the National Weather Service is reporting that preliminary indications are that the damage in the very northern city limits of Social Circle in the 1400 block of Fairplay Road in Social Circle on Wednesday evening was the result of an EF 1 tornado with winds in excess of 100 mph.

Initial Story

As residents in the Social Circle area of Walton County began extensive cleanup operations following a surprise storm that blew through the area Wednesday night, officials with the National Weather Service headed to the area to look for the classic signs of a tornado.

“The SOO (Science and Operations Officer is Steven Nelson) of the Atlanta NWS office is headed out to survey the damage, we’ll know more later today,” said Steve Brueck of North Georgia Weather, a blog that stays on top of weather in the local area.
