Update: Former WCSO Deputy questioned in Dekalb County shooting


Shiera Campbell, a spokesperson for the DeKalb County Police Department, said Tuesday morning that at this time the police report regarding the investigation into a shootout at a liquor store on Wesley Chapel Road around midnight on Feb. 12 is not being released.

“It is still early in the investigation and right now all we’re saying is that a 42-year-old, a 46-year-old and a 19-year-old were shot during this incident,” Campbell said. As far as the former Walton County sheriff’s deputy allegedly involvement, she said that is still be looking into.

“We’re not saying that he did anything criminal, but we are still investigating the incident,” Campbell said, adding that at this time no names are being released. She said she doesn’t believe that Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman has been spoken to regarding the former WCSO deputy, “but he is welcome to reach out to us.”

Chapman said that the deputy allegedly involved has not worked for WCSO since December, but also declined to give the name, referring any information to the Dekalb County authorities.

Initial Story

Police say around midnight Sunday there was a shootout in front of the liquor store on Wesley Chapel Road that left three people hurt. Everyone is expected to survive.

“We are trying to determine who shot whom,” Campbell said.

A shooting incident around midnight on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, at a liquor store in Dekalb County resulted in a liquor store owner and two other people being injured. Although it is being reported in several publications that a Walton County sheriff’s deputy is being questioned in connection with the incident, Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman said the deputy in question is no longer with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

“He has not been employed at Walton County since December,” Chapman said. However, he declined to give the name, referring it to the Dekalb County authorities who are currently withholding the name of the officer involved in the shooting.

According to published reports, the story has a lot of moving parts and the full story is still under investigation. It has been reported that it was possibly a robbery and during the course of the incident three people were shot, including the store owner, a possible suspect and possibly a bystander. None of the injuries are being reported as life-threatening at this time.

Few details have been released outside of the fact that it happened at the US 1 Package Store on Wesley Chapel Road at around midnight and that three people were shot, the store owner, a 19-year-old and a 47-year-old man. The former WCSO deputy reportedly was not shot. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation also referred any details to the Dekalb County authorities.

“We weren’t called in on that one so all of the information will come from DeKalb County,” Nelly Miles, director of public affairs for the GBI said.
At the time of publication, the Dekalb County public information officer had not returned a call.
