GBI charges stem from the father allowing his son to have the weapon
Update: GBI announce that in coordination with District Attorney Brad Smith, the GBI has arrested Colin Gray, age 54, the father of the alleged shooter, Colt Gray, 14, in connection to the shooting at Apalachee High School. Colin Gray is charged with:
- 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter
- 2 counts of second degree murder
- 8 counts of cruelty to children
The GBI director said that this was as a result of Colt Gray’s father allowing him to have the weapon.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the two students and two teachers whodied in the shooting at Apalachee High School Wednesday. They have been identified as: ⁃
- Mason Schermerhorn, age 14 (Student)
- Christian Angulo, age 14 (Student)
- Richard Aspenwall, age 39 (Teacher)
- Christina Irimie, age 53 (Teacher)
The family of former Walnut Grove coach David Phenix, who is now employed at Apalachee High School confirmed on social media that he was one of the victims injured in the shooting after being shot in the foot and the hip. However, following surgery for his injuries yesterday, he was in recovery at the hospital.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Atlanta released a statement on X confirming that they had looked into a then 13-year-old student following online threats regarding a school shooting at “an unidentified location and time” containing photographs of guns. The threat was passed on to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and was allegedly looked into resulting in the father confirming that there were guns in the house but the the teen did not have unsupervised access to them. The teen denied being the anonymous poster. The FBI confirmed that the teen they investigated last year is Colt Gray, then 14-year-old now charged in the Appalachee High School shooting.

Suspect surrendered to officers as soon as they arrived on the scene
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey reported that two students and two teachers were killed in the school shootings. He said that the 14-year-old suspect, identified as Colt Gray, surrendered as soon as officers arrived on the scene. He will be charged as an adult and the details following the investigation will be turned over to the Piedmont Area District Attorney Brad Smith.
Update: Report from GBI: Four dead. An additional nine taken to various hospitals with injuries. Suspect in custody and alive. Reports that the suspect has been ‘neutralized’ are inaccurate.
Update: Walton County government announced that as a precautionary measure, the Walton County GA Sheriff’s Office will have an increased presence at local schools today.
“This is not a reason for concern, there is no known threat to our school system at this time. We are assisting our neighboring county in every way that we can. The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority,” Walton County government posted on its social media page.
Kemp releases statement offering all resources needed
WALTON COUNTY, GA (Sept. 4, 2024) – Walton County first responders are assisting Barrow County following reports of a shooting at Appalachee High School in Barrow County.
Officials confirm that units from Walton County Fire Rescue, Walton EMS and Walton County Sheriff’s Office are currently assisting Barrow County.
Barrow County officials are reporting casualties but have not said how many or condition of casualties.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has released a statement saying that he has directed all state resources to respond to the incident at the school and to join his family “in praying for the safety those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.”
