Update: GBI investigating officer involved shooting in Covington

Update

Covington, GA (September 3, 2018) –  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting at 12:24 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, that resulted in serious injuries to Covington Police Officer Matt Cooper, 34, and the death of Aaron Demonta Fleming, 21.

According to a press release from the GBI, early indications are that Fleming died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cooper was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center where he remains in a serious condition.

GBI reports that Covington Police responded to 10300 Industrial Blvd at Walmart in reference to a shoplifting incident and were advised that a man was seen exiting the store with a bag in his hand. Cooper made contact with the suspect and a foot chase ensured. The suspect, Fleming, ran across the street to the back of another shopping center where several gunshots were fired. Cooper was hit and was airlifted to the hospital and Fleming sustained a fatal gunshot wound.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office and Social Circle Police Department responded with several other agencies  to offer assistance in the investigation. Other agencies included the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives, Georgia State Patrol, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Newton County Sheriff’s Office

A Covington police officer was airlifted to a hospital after being shot by an alleged shoplifter at the Walmart in Covington, according to a report by WSBTV.
