Update: Gwinnett SWAT team activity has ended with the gunman shooting himself

Update

Gwinnett County Police report that after several hours of communications with the suspect, officers found that he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He has been identified as James Burley Jr., 33. His next-of-kin have been notified of his death.

GCPD extended their appreciation to the neighbors for their patience.

Initial story

Gwinnett County Police are on the scene of a barricaded gunman on Laurel View Drive in the Unincorporated area of Snellville in Gwinnett County. As a result, Hewett Road has been shut down due to its close proximity to the scene. If this is on your commute home, you may want to consider an alternate route.

According to a press release, officers received information that a man with active warrants for his arrest was at a house on Laurel View Drive. While responding, officers were told that he had armed himself with a gun. Residents in the surrounding homes have been told to shelter in place and negotiations are currently under way for a peaceful surrender. Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services is staging at the command center as a precaution. The situation will be updated as new information is obtained.  You can also follow the progress on Twitter @GwinnettPd.
