Update: Identity given of man fatally shot by police following domestic incident


The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the man fatally shot by police on Saturday morning after they responded to a domestic-related incident in Lilburn. He has been identified as Steven Campos, 43, of Lilburn.

According to a press release, the GBI preliminary information indicates that at about 12:57 a.m., a neighbor called 911 in reference to a domestic disturbance at 4103 Bent Willow Drive, Lilburn, Gwinnett County, GA. When officers arrived, they located a victim in the back yard, suffering from knife injuries allegedly inflicted by Campos.

“Gwinnett County SWAT was activated and responded to the residence. At one point, Campos walked outside the front of the residence and discharged his firearm at officers. A SWAT officer fired, striking Campos. Officers rendered medical aid, but Campos was pronounced deceased at the scene,” GBI reported in the press release. “An autopsy will be performed by the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office. No officers were injured during the incident. Once the case is completed, it will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.”

GBI reported it is the 83rd officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2020.


(Lilburn, Ga., Nov. 7, 2020) – The Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT team was involved in an officer involved shooting on Saturday, Nov. 7. It was reportedly the result of a domestic-related call in which a female victim was injured. The suspect in the incident was shot by members of the SWAT team, reportedly when returning fire. He died on the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate.

According to a press release from GCPD, officers were called to the home on Bent Willow Drive regarding a domestic-related incident heard by a neighbor. Responding officers found the female victim in the back yard of the residence and, after treating her for injuries, she was removed from the scene. 

Officers report that while they were on scene the suspect came out of the residence and presented a firearm before going back inside. The suspect shot inside the residence and barricaded himself. Uniform officers unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate with the suspect before activated the Gwinnett County SWAT team. During the incident the suspect fired shots on several occasions while inside the residence while SWAT negotiators continued attempts to resolve the situation peacefully. At some point, the suspect came out of the residence an shot at SWAT officers.  An officer returned fire, hitting the suspect. SWAT officers and paramedics who were nearby attempted to render life-saving aid, but were not successful. The suspect died at the scene.

GCPD has called the GBI to handle the investigation.
