Update: Man dies in early morning wreck in Walton County


Georgia State Patrol Sgt. First Class James Buchanan confirmed that one person died early Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, morning in a head-on collision on Georgia 138. Alcohol is suspected in the accident which is currently being investigated by the GSP GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team Team. He has been identified as Corey Wheeler, 32, of Conyers, Ga. The at fault driver was identified as Lindsey Kate Riner, 35, of Bogart, Ga.

“One vehicle was traveling on SR 138 headed east from the HD Atha Road area and the other vehicle was traveling west on 138 and at some point the vehicle traveling toward Monroe crossed over the center line and hit the other vehicle head-on,” Buchanan said. “One driver was transported to Athens (Piedmont) and the other was pronounced deceased at the scene. No names being release as of right now.” 

Buchanan said the driver of the vehicle that crossed the center line and was the at-fault driver was a woman from Bogart Ga. and the man who died was from Conyers.

A portion of State Route 138 was closed for a few hours early this morning due to a serious car wreck.”

Walton County Fire Rescue responded to a 2 vehicle head-on collision on Hwy 138 at Vinies Drive just west of Monroe at 3:19 a.m. this morning. One patient was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional with non-life threatening injuries. The roadway was shut down in both the West and eastbound lanes for an extended closure,” Battalion Chief Craig League with WCFR said.

Georgia State Patrol and the GSP and the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team Team are investigating the accident, along with Walton County Sheriffs Office. A detour was established at H.D. Atha Road, and at Rowe Road intersections around the accident. The road was opened again before 7 a.m.
