Update: Man receives life plus 20 years in 2017 Social Circle murder

This week Desmond Jackson, of Social Circle, was found guilty of the murder of Heather Smith as well as  several other counts in a shooting on Aug. 20, 2017 that resulted in the death of Smith and the injury of another man. Jackson was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 20 years in confinement, according to a post on the Walton County District Attorney’s Facebook page.

A Walton County jury found Desmond Jackson guilty of felony murder as well as three counts of aggravated assault, aggravated battery and four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. In the incident, Jackson also shot a man in the leg and shot at another female victim. For these actions, Jackson was convicted of Felony Murder, 3 Counts of Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, and 4 Counts of Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Felony. Jackson

“The case was prosecuted by Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Cliff Howard, Investigator Aimee Oliver, Victim Services Director Kim Kelly, and Legal Assistant Karen Boss. The investigation and arrest was handled by the Social Circle Police Department. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office assisted by processing the crime scene.”

A 22-year-old Social Circle man has been charged in the double shooting in the city on Sunday that left a woman dead and a man injured. Social Circle Police Chief Tyrone Oliver said that Desmond Sherron Jackson, 22, of Social Circle is in custody and being held at the Walton County Jail charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated battery, possession of firearm during the commission of a crime and felony murder.

Oliver said that at 2:11 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, members of the Social Circle Police Department responded to 911 calls reporting a shooting in the area of Ronthor Drive and Tower Road.

“Upon arrival officers found two victims; 24 year old Heather Smith of Covington, Georgia and 26 year old Quantavious Banks of Social Circle Georgia. Heather Smith was pronounced dead on the scene and Banks was transported to a local area hospital with non-life threating injuries,” Oliver said. “The victims and suspect know each other but we are actively working the investigation to determine what led up to this event.   This is an isolated incident and there is no immediate danger to the public.”

Oliver said the Social Circle Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Walton County’s Sheriff’s Office, Coroner’s Office and District Attorney’s Office as well as The Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Deceased victim in shooting was a woman, but her name is still being withheld pending notification, according to the Social Circle Police Chief Tyrone Oliver. She has been identified as Heather Smith, 24, of Covington.

City of Social Circle Police Chief Tyrone Oliver said the Social Circle Police Department, in conjunction with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, is currently investigating a fatal shooting that happened in the city today,  Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017. He said the incident happened in the Tower Road / Ronthor Drive area.

“Right now we have one deceased and one transported to a local area hospital with what appears to be non life-threatening injuries,” Oliver said. “The suspect is in custody so there is no threat to the community.”

Oliver said at this time the name of the deceased and the others involved are not being released.
