Georgia State Patrol reports that at about 12:20 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, troopers responded to a single vehicle crash involving a City of Social Circle fire truck. According to the initial investigation, “the fire truck was responding in emergency mode to a structure fire with lights and siren activated. The fire truck was negotiating a left hand turn when the passenger side tires left the roadway to the right. The driver overcorrected crossing the center line, the driver again overcorrected, traveling back across the roadway, now yawing clockwise. Vehicle 1 then left the roadway, traveled down an embankment and overturned/rolled. Impact with the ground due to rollover caused a total collapse of the cab of the fire truck.” Both occupants were transported to medical facilities to be treated for injuries. According to Social Circle Fire Chief Ken Zaydel, the driver has been admitted to Grady ICU in serious but stable condition. The passenger was treated and released.
Hawkins Road is now open.
