Update: Piece of Jersey history a total loss after major fire

Fire under investigation – foul play not ruled out investigators say

An old school in the City of Jersey that was built in the 1900s is no more following a major fire on Sunday afternoon. Walton County Fire Rescue and Social Circle Fire Department responded to the fire at about 4:45 p.m. but were not able to save the building.
“It is a total loss,” said Walton County Assistant Fire Chief Craig Leagu. “It was well involved upon the initial 911 call. Units from Walton County include four fire engines, two ladder trucks, one water tanker, and three manpower squads. Social Circle included a fire engine and one ladder truck.”
League said the school has been closed since the 1960-70s.
“We have not determined a cause yet, but foul play is no being ruled out at this time,” League said. “We are still extinguishing hot spots and we will probably be here for the next few hours. Investigators from WCFR and the State Fire Marshals Office have already been contacted and are scheduled to return to the scene tomorrow morning.”
