Update: Races set for Social Circle City Council and School Board, two uncontested

Update at close of qualifying

At the end of qualifying on Friday, all but two seats up for re-election are contested. Incumbent District 3 Councilman David Keener is uncontested for his City Council post, as in John Callahan for Social Circle City Schools Board of Education Chairman. For District 1 on the City Council, Traysa Cody Price, William T. Haney and Adolphus Gaither will face off. School District 1 has four challengers, Jessica L. Hutcheson, Cassie D. Jones, Tonia Lumpkin and Kimberly B. Donaldson. In School District 2, Incumbent Jamie P. Petson faces a challenge from Antonio Rico Jackson and in School District 4, Incumbent Charles M. Akin faces a challenge from Sabrina R. Sanford-Flint.

Update: Thursday, Aug. 24

By Thursday, only District 4 had a contested race in the Social Circle City Schools Board of Education and District 1 had no candidate yet qualifying for the election.  In District 4, Incumbent Charles Akin will be facing a challenge from Sabrina R. Sanford-Flint. John Calihan is the only candidate so far for BOE Chairman. In the City Council elections, Incumbent Mayor Pro Tem and District 3 Councilman David Keener qualified to run for reelection and in District 1, Traysa Code Price is the sole qualifier so far.

Qualifying for the Social Circle School Board and City Council ends at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017.

Initial Story

The City of Social Circle will have an election on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 to elect city council members for District 1 and 3 as well as a Social Circle City School Board Chairman and School Districts 2 and 4 members. In addition, there will be a special election to fill the vacancy for Social Circle School Board District 1 vacated by Dr. Sinclair Grey.

Incumbent Social Circle City Council members whose seats are up are District 1, Scott Simpkins, and District 3, David Keener.

Incumbents on the Social City School Board are Chairman, Tim Lemonds, Appointee District 1, Larry Cross, District 2, Jamie Peterson, and District 4, Charlie Akin.

Qualifying for these positions is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21 to Friday, Aug. 25, 2017. Qualifying is at the office of the City Clerk, Social Circle City Hall, 166 N. Cherokee Road, Social Circle. Anyone wishing to run for office will need to file a Notice of Candidacy and pay a qualifying fee equal to 3 percent of the annual salary of the office sought. The qualifying fee for City of Social Circle Council Member District 1 and District 3 is $144.00. The qualifying fee for Social Circle City School Board Chairman and Members District 2 and District 4 is $18.00.
