Update: Second passenger in the Sunday’s crash on Highway 138 succumbs to her injuries


Cpl. Cal Barton with the Georgia State Patrol reported that on Monday evening the second back seat passenger in the Honda Odyssey van involved in a crash on Highway 138 on Sunday night, Deloris Bennett, 89, of Smyrna, passed away as a result of the injuries she sustained in the wreck.

Barton said Charles Ruark, 66, of Bogart, Deloris Bennett, 89, of Smyrna and Tassie Ruark, 64, of Bogart, were all transported to Gwinnett Medical with serious injuries. Tassie Ruark succumbed to her injuries a short time after arrival. They were in the Honda Odyssey van. Tassie Ruark and Deloris Bennett were both back seat passengers in the van. There was no passenger in the front seat.

Darius Lovett, 26, of College Park was the driver of the Honda Civic.

“Charges are pending at this time,” Impairment for either driver is not suspected at this time,” Barton said. “The reconstruction will be further investigating.”

Initial story

Walton County Fire Rescue responded to a 2-car crash on Highway 138 at Guthrie Cemetery Road this afternoon at 4:39 pm.

“Four patients total were transported by EMS, two of those injured are in critical condition,” WCFR Assistant Chief said. “All patients were transported to Northside Hospital in Gwinnett.”

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Cal Barton said the driver of a Honda Civic was traveling east on Highway 138, attempting a left turn onto Guthrie Cemetery Road when it traveling into the path of a Honda Odyssey van that was traveling west on Highway 138. The Civic was struck in the right side by the front of the Odyssey.
