Update: Suspect arrested in MAHS threat that prompted lockdown


Walton County Sheriff’s Office reports that an 18-year-old male has been arrested for alleged terroristic threats and disruption of a school for making threats via social media against a specific student at Monroe Area High School. The suspect is currently in the Walton County Detention Center. The City of Monroe Police Department and Morgan County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation and officials say the lockdown of the school was a precautionary measure. No students were ever at risk.

Initial report

The Walton County School District reports that Monroe Area High School has been placed on a Level 1 Lockdown, but all the students are safe and will continue with normal daily activities inside the building for the rest of the day.

“Due to an outside threat made against a specific student, Monroe Area High School has been placed on a level I lockdown as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of their students,” said Callen Moore, public relations officer with Walton County School District. “All students are safe and normal daily activities will continue inside the building with additional security on campus for the remainder of the day.”

School personnel say they are working closely with law enforcement to try to identify the threat.
