Update: Trump takes Walton County, Georgia and the country to win the 2024 Presidential Election

Walton County Sheriff win goes to Brooks – local incumbents earn reelection

In the unofficial results for Walton County, 58,716 votes were cast out of 75,919 registered voters. This represents a 77% voter turnout.

In the local contested races, Walton County Chief Deputy (Republican) was elected to take over as Sheriff in January when current Sheriff Joe Chapman officially retires. He beat his Democratic challenger by 77.35 to 22.65% with 44,244 votes to Olaoluwa’s 12,959. All other local Walton County candidates were reelected unopposed. (The full results of each race appear in column below)

In addition, the proposal to allow for packaged sales of distilled spirits in the City of Monroe passed with 4,334 votes or 72.34% voting in favor of the measure and 1,657 or 27.66% voting against it. Similarly, in Social Circle voters approved Sunday sales of packaged sales by 1,645 votes or 65.28% to 875 votes or 34.72% voting against it.

On the national stage, former and now future President Donald J.Trump was elected on Nov. 5, 2024 as the 47th president of the United States. At this time, all the votes have not come in but in the early hours of Nov. 6, after the states of Georgia and Wisconsin were called for him, the AP called the election for Trump when his electoral college votes took him over the 270 mark necessary to win. As of 9 a.m., Jan. 6, he is holding 277 electoral votes to Vice President Kamala Harris’ 226. The results still have to come in for Alaska, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona and Maine. Trump is currently leading in all but Maine.

Georgia voted for Trump with him getting 2,651,196 votes or 50.75%, Harris getting 2,533,821 or 48.51%, Libertarian Chase Oliver getting 20,575 votes or 0.39% and Green Party candidate Jill Stein getting 18,095 votes or 0.35%. Of the 5,223,687 votes cast, Trumps win was decisive enough to avoid a recount. The votes for Oliver and Stein also were not enough to spoil a potential Harris win. He would have won even if all those votes had gone to her.

Georgia Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Collins, whose District 10 includes Walton County, beat Democratic challenger Alexander “Lexy” Doherty with 256,167 votes, or 63.08% of the vote to her 149,901 votes or 36.92%. He returns to the US House for another 2-year term. He won decisively in Walton County with 74.86% of the vote.

At the State level, in the Georgia Senate, Incumbent District 42 Sen. Brian Strickland beat his Democratic challenger Kacy D. Morgan with 62,540 votes or 58.24% to 44,845 votes or 41.76%. He too won decisively in Walton County with 72.41% of the vote.

In Senate District 46, Republican Sen. Bill Cowsert won reelection with 64,585 or 64.73% of the vote to Democratic challenger Gareth Fenley’s 36,758 votes or 36.27%. He also won Walton County decisively with 77.09%.

In the Georgia House of Representatives, District 111 Republican Rep. Rey Martinez won reelection with 21,102 votes or 61.55% of the vote to Democratic challenger Scott T. Jackson’s 13,183 votes or 34.48%. As was the trend, Martinez easily took Walton County with 71.10% of the vote.

All the other local, district and state candidates on the ballot that serve Walton County won reelection unchallenged.
