Update: Woman who died in Oconee County OIS identified as 40-year-old Athens resident


Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the woman who died in the officer involved shooting Monday as Julia Moss, 40, of Athens. Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reported that she was a guest at the residence having spent the previous night there. A male resident had called 911 after Moss allegedly stabbed a dog and hit the male resident in the head with a pipe, leaving a visible injury to his head. Another male resident had barricaded himself in a bedroom for safety and she allegedly came at police with a knife after they had tried unsuccessfully to talk her down.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 10:26 a.m., OCSO deputies responded to a domestic dispute 911 call at 1001 Creek View Court in Athens, Oconee County. Deputies met with the male caller who said a woman inside the residence had hit him in the head with an object and was being aggressive toward him. Deputies entered the residence and located the woman who was armed with a knife and was holding a lit blowtorch. For approximately 17 minutes, two deputies attempted to resolve the situation by telling her to put the knife down. At one point, the female made a verbal threat and charged at the deputies while still holding the knife. One deputy fired multiple times, striking the female. The deputies called for emergency medical assistance and provided aid to the female; however, she died on the scene.

It was also determined that another male was barricaded inside the residence who had been hiding from the female for several hours due to her aggressive behavior. 

No deputies were injured during the incident. The female subject will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once completed, it will be turned over to the Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

Initial story

Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reports that it expects to release body cam footage by Tuesday morning of the shooting on Monday morning of a woman involved in a domestic dispute. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently reviewing the footage and notifications are being made to the next of kin.

The OCSO report that this morning at 10:17 AM, deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute policeon Creekview Court off of White Oak Drive (in the Athens area of Oconee County.) Additional units were requested after responding units arrived to find that a female on the scene was armed with a knife and a blow torch. The incident ended after the female was tased and shot by deputies allegedly after she charged them with the knife. CPR was performed but she died on the scene. No deputies were injured in the incident but the male who was involved in the domestic dispute had sustained minor injuries before officers arrived.
