On July 1, Walton County Master Gardeners teamed up with the Walton County Boys and Girls Club to recognize police officers, Walton County Sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and veterans who keep those in the community safe – and they used the occasion to dedicate the new gardens on display at the Boys and Girls Club. The gardens are the work of the master gardeners and young members of the Boys and Girls Club who had teamed up to revitalize the outdoor landscaping and plant gardens on the property.
Master Gardener Eileen Wainwright pointed out the work that the children had completed under the guidance of the Walton County Master Gardeners and explained a little about the community projects that the master gardeners undertake, such as at the McDaniel-Tichenor House and the project with the Boys and Girls Club. In this particular project, they worked with the children to refurbish the vegetable gardens and to landscape around the front entrance and the flagpole.
“We taught the boys and girls about gardening, how to plant a plant,” Wainwright said, going on to thank those who had helped with the project as well as those who had donated, helping raise $4,500 in values, services and donated items. “As a result, we didn’t just plant a couple of bushes here at the flagpole, we were able to plant an entire garden.”
The students who participated in the project were introduced, along with the other members of the Walton County Master Gardeners: Becky Brewer, Susan Biscoglia, Peggy Knight, Mohammed Ameer and Janet Bones. Shanna Welch, who was not able to be present, had also participated.
Since it was so close to Independence Day, it provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate the occasion and thank those responsible for our freedoms. Chris Hickman from American Legion Post 64 in Monroe was invited to speak.
“Our American Legion Post has recently moved. We’re now on Cherry Hill Road not on Alcovy Road anymore. But we’re still here working in the community. We still do a lot of these outdoor events supporting Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in our community,” Hickman said, before going on to introduce Boy Scout Troop 81 to raise the flag and salute as everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Everyone was then treated to an early Independence Day luncheon of hot dogs, watermelon and cake.
