Weekly update from Monroe Walton Center for the Art

Calling our artist-members!
One LAST reminder (after months of reminders!!) …

Contact us ASAP if you’d like to be considered for our Gifts from the HeART Gallery of Gifts! We had a great holiday season last year. Many of our customers are already saying that they can’t wait to shop with us again this year!

From November 1 to the end of December we turn our entire gallery into a fabulous gift shop.

Here’s the details:
* Every entry must be under $200 and most items should be $35 and under. Our average selling price last year was around $20 but we had items sell for over $100.
* Drop off and set up your shop (you will be a provided one of our boards if you need it; bring your own table to display your works if needed): October 25 – 27 and October 30 – 31.
* You will decorate your “shop” to make it festive and inviting.
* Please refresh your shop at least twice with new items.
* Gift Shop opens November 1 (Light Up the Night late shopping night opens the season).
* We are open late until 8 pm every Thursday in November and December. (Help appreciated!)

Let’s make this a fun, creative and beautiful experience for our neighbors.  Last year we had many new visitors who had never ventured into MWCA before.  Let’s invite our community to buy and give local art!

PS – Is your organization (church, school, business etc.) holding an arts-related event?  Let us know and we’ll help you spread the word!

FOR READERS – TWO (!) Book Clubs …

Saturday, October 20 at 1 – 3 – Young adult book club
Join us at our first book club for young adults ages 14 – 18. This is a free event and open to the public. Hosted by local writer Beth Dawkins.

This month’s selection is “The Raven Boys” by Maggie Stiefvater, book 1 of 4 in the Raven Cycle series. An unlikely group stumbles across ancient magic in Virginia: Blue, the daughter of the town psychic in Henrietta, Virginia, who has been told for as long as she can remember that if she ever kisses her true love, he will die. Gansey, who seeks the Welsh magic he believes saved his life. Adam, who searches for a way out of the circumstances he was born into. Ronan, who seeks to recover the magic of his childhood. Available on Kindle https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0096T5P7O .   Or check our local library.  While highly recommended, you do not have to read the book to join in the conversation. Visit the author’s web http://www.maggiestiefvater.com/the-raven-boys/ .

Tuesday, October 23 at 6:30 – Local Author Book Club
Free event. Open to the public. Meet author Lynn Hesse at our monthly book club meeting for a lively discussion of her novel “Another Kind of Hero”. Books will be for sale that evening or you can purchase on the author’s web page: https://lynnhesse.com/. You do not have to buy a book to join in the evening’s event. Lynn Hesse, the first place winner, 2015 Oak Tree Press Contest, Cop Tales, launched her debut novel, “Well of Rage” based on her law enforcement experiences at the Decatur Book Festival, Decatur, Georgia, September 2016.
