The Georgia Department of Education recognized two local schools recently as Literacy Leaders for their improvement in reading proficiency.

Sharon Elementary School and Monroe Elementary School were both presented with ribbons and banners honoring their achievement on Monday by State Schools Superintendent Richard Woods.

“We try to make sure we recognize proficiency and growth,” Woods said. “We look at this each year and if you have at least 10 percent growth, you get a banner. It’s quite significant.”

SES saw an increase in third grade reading scores on the state Milestones test to achieve an 82 percent reading proficiency level, jumping 12.8 percentage points from a 69 percent last year.

“We’re very proud of the school’s achievement and growth,” Beth Morgan, principal at SES, said.

MES saw increase in third and fifth grades, achieving two ribbons for growth in reading levels. Third graders rose 13 percentage points, from 56 to 69 percent, while fifth graders rose 15 percentage points, from 57 to 68 percent.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the efforts of our students and staff to make this happen,” Dane Callahan, principal at MES, said. “This is years in the making.”

Chip Underwood, superintendent of the Walton County School District, said both schools were to be commended for their hard work in achieving the recognition.

“I’m proud of both schools,” Underwood said of the accomplishment. “We want to say congratulations to everyone.”
