YMCA presentation on the Monroe City Council Agenda Tuesday

At the January Monroe City Council, there will be a presentation on a YMCA. Monroe Mayor John Howard said he recently toured the YMCA in Winder and invited officials to make a presentation on the one destined for Monroe.

“It is just an update on what we need to do to get a YMCA here,” Howard said. “There’s already land donated and the best thing we can do is have them come here and at least tell the Council what they need and what they need from us to help them get it done.”

A 35-acre property on the connector between Charlotte Rowell Blvd and Double Springs Church Road was donated by the Rowell family several years ago but the recession put things on hold for more than a decade. A couple of years ago, a steering committee revived the plans and completed a needs assessment.

“I believe Monroe needs a YMCA. It’s good for families; it’s good for fitness and there’s a lot of advantages that a Y offers a community,” Howard said.

Although no timeline has yet been given, a press release came out last year containing a map confirming the location and announcing that Georgia’s Piedmont YMCA would be bringing a Greater Walton YMCA to Monroe.

The January Monroe City Council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019 in Council Chambers at City Hall, 215 N. Broad St. If you can’t make it to the meeting, you can watch the meeting live on the local television Channel 16. The YMCA presentation is at the beginning of the meeting just after the formalities.
