Parents from Youth Middle School received a letter this afternoon notifying them of a rapid increase in cases of COVID-19 at the schools since last reported on Friday.
“Since Feb. 26, we have been notified of 21 positive cases across the school,” YMS principal David Todd wrote. In the report from Walton County School district on Feb. 26, there were that number of cases reported district-wide. These cases have been reported to the Georgia Department of Public Health and will be included, along with any additional ones, in the regular weekly reporting by WCSD this Friday. In the meantime, Todd said they are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
“We are taking additional precautions, including changing all air filters and fogging the school building during and after school hours,” he said.
Todd said that at this time they have not been able to trace these cases direct to any specific spread within the school building, but some cases have been connected to outside events and gatherings. He urged families to remain vigilant in efforts to limit their children’s exposure in order to help keep the school open and safe.
“Parents should continue to monitor their students each day for symptoms of COVID-19, which could include fever, loss of taste or smell, headache, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, sore throat, fatigue, congestion or runny nose, body aches and/or nausea,” Todd wrote. He asked parents to please keep children home and contact their healthcare provider as soon as possible should they develop these symptoms and to notify the school if a student tests positive.
