Officials with the City of Loganville announce that the city has been awarded federal funding through the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives (TA) Program to begin preliminary engineering for a new sidewalk network designed to improve pedestrian safety near local schools.
The project will add sidewalks along Lee Byrd Road and Old Zion Cemetery Road, creating safer walking routes in front of Bay Creek Elementary School and extending toward the Loganville High School football stadium.
“Sidewalks in this area have been discussed by the city for several years,” said Assistant City Manager Dr. Jeff Smith. “This funding allows us to finally move forward on a project that protects our students and connects our schools.”
The federal grant requires a 20 percent local match, which the city will fund using existing SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) revenue.
“Our taxpayers specifically voted for SPLOST revenue to support transportation infrastructure,” Dr. Smith added. “Leveraging those local sales tax dollars to secure this major federal investment is an exceptional win for our community.”
State Representative Rey Martinez also praised the award.
“I am thrilled that Loganville received this grant,” Martinez said. “This is a vital project that is much needed in our community. It is a fantastic example of local government partnering with the state to deliver meaningful results for our citizens.”
The Transportation Alternatives Program, administered by GDOT in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, helps fund pedestrian, bicycle and other community transportation projects that improve safety and connectivity.
