Construction of SR 138 and 81 intersection roundabout set to begin in 2025

Walton County Sheriff’s Office Walnut Grove precinct will no longer operate at its current location

WALNUT GROVE, GA (Dec. 19, 2024) – Walton County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that the Walnut Grove precinct will no longer operate at its current location. It is set to be taken down to make way for construction on the State Route 138 / 81 intersection traffic circle. Demolition of the WCSO Walnut Grove precinct will begin in January.

Preliminary engineering by the Georgia Department of Transportation on this project began back in 2018 at an estimated final cost of about $9.13 with construction expected to being this year. However, that is a little behind schedule and it is possible that the original cost projections may need to be adjusted.

The roundabout project was originally proposed to address congestion and operational issues at the intersection and to reduce crashes. According to the GDOT traffic analysis, should this project not be undertaken, by 2046 there would be severe congestion at the intersection causing long delays. The intersection reportedly already have issues that need to be addressed.

The Georgia DOT project is the construction of a multi-lane roundabout with right turn bypass lanes on both the east and west approaches.

In the meantime, WCSO is currently looking for a new location for the Walnut Grove precinct.

“The Loganville precinct and the Good Hope precinct are, of course still operating. And certainly the main office of WCSO is alive and well,” WCSO noted on social media.
